About Vaccines for Children (ages 5-11)
COVID-19 vaccinations are now available for children ages 5-11 who wish to get vaccinated.
- The obligation to endeavor to receive vaccines based on the Immunization Act does not apply to COVID-19 vaccinations for children. Please refer to notices and the information provided by the national government and decide for yourself whether to have your child get vaccinated.
Who is the vaccine for
Registered residents of Niigata City ages 5-11
Vaccine type
The children’s vaccine made by Pfizer will be used.
- The vaccine’s dosage and administration are different from the vaccine for people 12 years or older.
- Children who turn 12 years old between the 1st and 2nd doses will get the children’s vaccine for their 2nd dose.
Number of doses and interval between doses
2 doses with 3 weeks in between.

Vaccination is free of charge
How and where to get vaccinated
Vaccinations can be received at medical institutions in Niigata City such as pediatric clinics.
Those who wish to be vaccinated should contact a medical institution after receiving the vaccination coupon to make an appointment to get vaccinated.

Things to bring on the day of vaccination
- Vaccination coupon (接種券)
- Health insurance card
- Prevaccination Screening Questionnaire (fill out beforehand)
- Mother and child health handbook (in case of a child of preschool age; 6 or younger)
* The signature of a guardian (with parental authority) is needed on the vaccination questionnaire.
* Be sure to include a phone number that can be used to contact the guardian during the daytime.
Vaccination coupon
Coupons will be sent in order of age.
- For ages 11-9 (born between March 22, 2010 and April 1, 2013) Coupons will be sent on March 22 (Tue)
- For ages 8-5 (born between April 2, 2013 and April 1, 2017) Coupons will be sent on March 28 (Mon)
* For those born on or before March 21, 2010, the coupon will be sent on their 12th birthday
* For those born on or after April 2, 2017, the coupon will be sent on their 5th birthday.
The following will be sent with the coupon.
- The coupon (a sticker, do not peel it off of the paper)
- Information about the vaccine (1 copy)
- Prevaccination Screening Questionnaire (2 copies)
The vaccination is administered differently for people 12 or older
People 12 or older should get vaccinated the same way as an adult.
How and where to get vaccinated
Vaccinations can be received at a hospital/clinic or at a vaccination site.
A) Hospital/Clinic You can get vaccinated at a medical institution in the city

Medical institutions with a circle (〇) marked on the right side under “1・2回目接種” provide 1st and 2nd doses.
B) Vaccination Sites
Provide vaccinations approximately once per month.

Vaccine type
For the time being, the Moderna vaccine will be used.
Note
It is incredibly rare, but cases of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (swelling of the tissue around the heart) have been reported. Especially for adolescent and young adult males, that risk seems to be lower with the Pfizer vaccine than with the Moderna vaccine.
