About the 3rd Dose of the COVID-19 Vaccines

Based on the national government’s implementation policy for the COVID-19 booster shot, Niigata City also is making 3rd doses of COVID-19 vaccines available.

About the 3rd Dose

A booster shot (3rd dose) will be available because the effectiveness of the 2nd dose of a COVID-19 vaccine decreases as time passes.

  • Vaccination will be given only with the consent of the individual to be vaccinated. It is not compulsory or mandatory. Please understand the benefits and risks of side effects and decide whether to get vaccinated of your own free will.

Who is the booster for

For people 12years or older who have had their 2nd dose of their vaccination series at least 6 months ago.

    (People ages 12-17 are now able to get the 3rd dose as well.)
    Vaccination is available from the same date 6 months after the 2nd dose.
    You cannot get the dose before 6 months have passed.
      Ex. Date of 2nd dose: October 31; 3rd dose: May 1

For people 12 years or older at the time of vaccination.

Vaccine type

Regardless of which vaccine was given for the 1st and 2nd doses, an mRNA vaccine (either Pfizer or Moderna) will be given.
People ages 12-17 will only be given the Pfizer vaccine.
Moderna is available at vaccination sites (some venues and dates will have Pfizer) and Moderna and Pfizer are available at clinics.

  • Vaccine type may vary depending on changes in supply.

Number of doses

The booster is only one dose.

Cost

Vaccination is free of charge.

People who are especially recommended to get the booster

  • The elderly and people with an underlying medical condition
  • People who have close contact with those who are at high risk of severe infection and caregivers (nursing staff, etc.)
  • People who are at high risk due to their working environment (medical staff, etc.)

How to get vaccinated

As a general rule, get the 3rd dose the same way as the 2nd dose.
Vaccines cannot be given without a vaccine coupon.

I.People who got the 2nd dose at a vaccination site

  • 65 years old or older(born on or before April 1, 1957) 

You will be sent information about your vaccination sites and location.
Please go to the vaccination site at the day and time listed.
You can change the date, time, and vaccination site.
If you do not want to get the vaccine, or do not want to get the vaccine at a vaccination site, please cancel your reservation.
※People who wish to be vaccinated ahead of the original schedule should change their vaccination site reservation.

  • 64 years old or younger(born on or after April 2,1957)

Please reserve an appointment for a vaccination site by yourself.
Make the reservation after your coupon arrives.

  • Vaccination sites primarily provide Moderna vaccines. However, some venues and dates will have Pfizer.

II.People who got the 2nd dose at a clinic

Reserve an appointment with the clinic where you got your 2nd dose. Make the reservation after your coupon arrives.

  • Method of reservation will vary depending on the clinic.

  • For the time being Moderna is available at clinics.

III.Some people may be able to get vaccinated at their workplace or nursing home.

IV.People who moved to Niigata City after getting their 2nd dose or cannot get their 3rd dose at their workplace, as a general rule, should make a vaccination site reservation.

Things to bring with you to the vaccination site

  1. 3rd Dose Vaccine Coupon (sticker)
  2. Identity verification document
  3. Prevaccination Screening Questionnaire (sent with the coupon)

About 3rd Dose Vaccine Coupons

A vaccine coupon is required to get the 3rd dose.

3rd dose vaccine coupons will be issued to people 12 years or older who have had their 2nd dose.

  • Coupons will be sent before 6 months have passed since the 2nd dose, in order of when people were vaccinated.
  • Coupons will only be sent to registered residents of Niigata City who got 2 doses and it will be sent to the address they are registered at.
  • People need to apply to get a vaccine coupon if they moved to Niigata City after getting their 2nd dose.(This includes people who got their 2nd dose in Niigata City, moved to a different municipality and then moved back to Niigata City)

The 3rd dose vaccine coupon includes the following

  • 3rd Dose Vaccine Coupon (sticker)
  • Prevaccination Screening Questionnaire
  • Vaccine Information Flyer

※Vaccines cannot be given without a vaccine coupon.
※Keep the coupon sticker safe and intact. Do not take the sticker off.

Distribution of coupons to people ages 12-17
Who Timing of Distribution
(1)People who got their 2nd dose on/before October 28, 2021 The week of April 18
(2) People who got their 2nd dose on/after October 29, 2021 From the week of April 25

Afterwards, coupons will be sent weekly to people in the order in which they got their 2nd dose.
・People who should have received their coupon but have not yet should contact the call center.

People who need to apply for a 3rd dose vaccine coupon

  • People who moved to Niigata City after getting the 2nd dose
  • People who got 2 doses in Japan but do not have proof of vaccination due to an error in records, etc.
  • People who got 2 doses outside of Japan or finished 2 doses, one in Japan and another one outside of Japan
  • People who got 2 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine as a part of a vaccination program such as the one to vaccinate Japanese people living outside of Japan

※ The above only applies vaccines made by Pfizer, Moderna, or AstraZeneca
※ If the above are applicable, apply for a vaccine coupon the same way as someone who moved to Niigata City after receiving their 2nd dose
※ When applying, attach documents that prove the individual got the 1st and 2nd

For people who moved to Niigata City after their 2nd dose

People who moved to Niigata City after getting their 2nd dose need to apply to have a 3rd dose vaccine coupon sent.
(This includes people who got their 2nd dose in Niigata City, moved to a different municipality and then moved back to Niigata City)
・People who moved to Niigata City between May 1 and November 30, 2021 will be sent the application form in mid-December
・People who received their vaccine coupon for the 1st and 2nd doses after moving to Niigata City, do not need to apply

People who were vaccinated outside of Japan

Regardless of where someone was vaccinated, the number of doses they received of Pfizer, Moderna, or AstraZeneca (vaccines recognized by the Japanese government)、 will determine how many doses they get in Japan.
